Lard Yai Market – Sunday Walking Street on Thalang Road

The Lard Yai Market in Phuket’s Old Town quarter is one of the island’s popular hotspots. In Chinese, Lard Yai translates to ‘big market street’ and the Sunday Walking Street, as it is commonly known, is no exception. Nestled amongst the famous Sino-Portuguese shophouses on Thalang Road, the Lard Yai Market has quickly become a weekend favorite and the island’s most popular walking street market.

Lard Yai Market takes place every Sunday from 4:00 – 10:00pm. The Sunday Walking Street presents the perfect opportunity to sample an abundance of Thai street delicacies and buy souvenirs in a charming ambience while experiencing a slice of true local life.

A performance venue set up in the middle of the market hosts live sessions by local musicians, community talks, and art performances. Local schools also showcase Thai dancing native to the region which is fantastic to watch.

 Street Food Heaven

A large variety of food vendors are on hand at the Sunday Walking Street. Cuisine on offer includes seafood, barbecued meats, noodles, fresh fruit, crepes and drinks such as traditional Thai tea, coffee and fruit shakes. There is one small beer garden in the market. Note that while it is acceptable to sit and drink there, it is not encouraged to walk around the market with an open container. Likewise, the market is strictly no smoking.

The unique, colourful shophouses that line Thalang Road are open for business as usual every Sunday which gives the chance to snap photos of the architecture and buildings that compromise Phuket’s historical Old Town quarter.
