Phuket’s Por Tor Festival
Widely known across Southeast Asia as the “Hungry Ghost Festival,” Phuket’s annual Por Tor Festival takes place during the second half of the 7th lunar month, which generally tends to be mid to late August well into early September. An important merit-making event for the island’s ethnic Chinese population, the Por Tor Festival is also an interesting event that should not be missed while you are staying at Kata Ocean View Residences.
During the Hungry Ghost Festival, it is believed that ghosts are let out of both heaven and hell for the duration of the festival. Families adorn their ancestors’ altars with special food, fresh flowers and candles in order to feed the ghosts while they are allowed to roam free. Make-shift altars are often set up to allow the lost souls with no place to go the chance to eat.
The Hungry Ghost Festival is a colourful event, and celebrated widely across Phuket’s Chinese shrines. However, the most fantastic place to experience the festival is in Phuket Town. Two of the biggest celebrations take place at Seng Tek Bel Shrine on Phuket Road and the fresh market on Ranong Road.
Lots of activities take place during the festival including merit-making ceremonies and lion dances. Onlookers will also have the chance to sample a variety of local foods including Chinese-influenced dishes which are a favourite in Phuket. Evening entertainment often includes a cabaret show, karaoke or live music near the shrine entrance.
The red turtle is the symbol of Phuket’s Por Tor Festival as the Chinese believe that the turtle represents strength and is a recognizable symbol of longevity. Many offerings on the altars are comprised of red turtle cakes made from sugar and flour. Cakes are available for purchase during the festival at all of the Chinese shrines as well.
