Around the Island… on the motorbike
Driving in Phuket is certainly an experience and by far the best way to see the Island’s amazing scenery. The legal age for ride a motorcycle up to 110cc it is only 15 years. If the motorcycle is over 110cc the legal age is lifted to 18 years. You are required to carry a valid driving license whenever you drive (Thai license or International license). The police are often generous with foreign visitors and accept a foreign driving license. However, they are not obliged to so, it is better to be safe and carry a legal driving license.
The road network in Phuket is generally in good condition. Some of the inclines over the hilly terrain of Phuket are steep and you should take care, especially in the wet. In general it is not road conditions that cause problems but road users. Traffic in Thailand drives on the left hand side of the road – well mostly. Thai drivers will happily drive on the wrong side of the road if it helps them get to their turning quicker. Driving laws, road signs and markings are based on international conventions and are easy to understand. Most direction signs are written in both Thai and English. Distances are marked in kilometres. The urban speed limit is 60 km/h and on country roads and expressways, it varies from 90 to 120 km/h.
Gas stations in Thailand are usually open from 8 am to 9 pm. Only one on the island – the Shell gas station on Dibuk Road, Phuket Town , opposite Wat Mongkol Nimit – stays open 24 hours a day. A few others serve gas until 10 pm or even midnight. You’ll see vendors with small booths selling gas at the roadside, pumping the gas by hand from barrels, or selling it by the bottle. These are not recommended except in dire emergency
If you are driving a motorcycle, you must wear a crash helmet. If you drive a motorcycle around Phuket without wearing a crash helmet, you can expect to be stopped and fined by a traffic policeman. It is also illegal to carry more than one pillion passenger but again this law is rarely enforced. It is not unusual to see a Thai family of four on a motorbike, perhaps with their dog in the basket.
Don’t ride a motorbike with your shirt off because, under Thai law, showing it off on the streets is illegal. In the beach areas, it probably won’t be a problem, but in Phuket Town or other parts of the island away from the seaside, it’s a different matter; the police may stop you, tell you to put your shirt on and possibly even fine you to a maximum of 500 baht. Don’t jump onto a motorbike if you do not have real experience.. Driving in Phuket is very different from, and much more chaotic than what you know at home.
