Phuket Big Buddha
Located high above southern Phuket in the Nakkerd Hills, the Big Buddha is a 45-meter tall white marble statue that is one of the island’s favourite tourist attractions. The attraction is hard to miss and it commands attention from most points in the southern part of the island. In all honesty, the Big Buddha is absolutely massive.
One of the most Scenic Spots on Phuket
A very steep hill leads up to the Big Buddha which opens to an expansive parking lot that houses a small building. This building often hosts Buddhist ceremonies and functions as a living history museum of the Big Buddha. Construction on the statue started in 2004 and has been mostly funded by donations from both locals and people around the world. Inside this building, a variety of local organic Thai products and Buddhist amulets are also sold.
Follow a set of winding stairs to reach the top of the attraction where you will be able to view the Big Buddha in its entirety. Next to the Big Buddha there is a much smaller golden Buddha made of brass, a variety of Ganesha statues, spirit houses and Buddhist bells. Although crowded with tourists, the atmosphere atop the Big Buddha is quite peaceful and calm.
You can see the Big Buddha from your Balcony at Kata Ocean View
The views from the top of the hill that the Big Buddha is perched upon are excellent. Most of southern Phuket can be seen including Chalong Bay, Phang Nga Bay on a clear day and gorgeous views of both Kata and Kata Noi beaches from the western side of the Big Buddha. From Kata Ocean View you can actually see the Big Buddha from the Sea View Balconies:
The steep, winding road that brings you to the Big Buddha is scattered with a variety of coffee shops, small restaurants with exquisite views and elephant camps. The coffee shops and small restaurants are nice to stop at for a break as the food is good and the views are great. If you are unfamiliar with southern Phuket, the Big Buddha is on Chaofa West road not far from Wat Chalong. There are signs that landmark the attraction everywhere. The road to Big Buddha is in decent condition, but it is very steep and can be crowded so please do drive carefully. From Kata Ocean View you will reach the Big Buddha in 10 to 20 Minutes.
Dress Appropriately when visiting
There is no entrance fee to the Big Buddha, and the attraction is open 365 days a year. It should be noted to dress appropriately as the dress code is strictly enforced. It is best to cover your shoulders and knees if you are a lady. It is encouraged to be respectful of the local customs and culture of Thailand when visiting the Big Buddha.
