The name of the Thai guava, or Farang, is the same used to describe Westerners. Farang can mean “white” or “Western” and is thought to have been attributed to the fruit because of its origins: the guava was in fact imported from Central America.

This fruit, rich of vitamin C, has the size, texture and appearance similar to an apple and can be more round or more oval depending on the variety. The skin is usually a little rough and may have a bitter or sweet taste depending on the type and level of maturation of the fruit. Even the color of the skin can change: if it’s green it means that the fruit is bitter, but when it reaches the maturation turns yellow or brownish. The guava scent reminiscent lemon, though less strong, while the taste of the flesh is quite sour; the color of the pulp can change from white to deep pink and has the seeds in the center.

In Thailand this fruit is consumed in a thousand ways, but the most common is eating it raw, sliced in a mix of pepper, salt or sugar, which helps to counteract the sour taste of guava.
